This course is designed to provide graduate students with numerous opportunities to use English in scientific communication. The ultimate goal is to train students to write reports based on their own research work and to communicate with other researchers and scientists in English. To achieve this goal, students will be required to read and discuss sample publications.
In addition to the topics below, there will also be discussions on global issues to broaden the knowledge of students interested in working in an international organization. There will also be discussions on the search for sustainable ways of utilizing global resources to satisfy our 5F (Food, Fiber, Feed, Fuel, and Fertilizer) needs.

Expected Learning
At the end of the lecture, students should be able to acquire enough oral communication skills to enable them to:
(1) Present their research work orally in English.
(2) Participate in seminars, workshops, discussions, ask questions and express their opinions in English.
(3) Write reports based on their own research findings, and share them with other researchers in English.

Course schedule
Week 1: Orientation: Explanation of the course content and grading criteria
Week 2: Communicating in multi-cultural societies
Week 3: Scientific journals and impact factors
Week 4: Making research titles attractive
Week 5: A brief explanation of the main components of a scientific paper (Abstract, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results and Discussion, Conclusions, References, Acknowledgement)
Week 6: Sentence and paragraph connectors frequently used by native English writers in articles
Week 7: Identifying and correcting errors in scientific reports
Week 8: Writing reports based on “model experiments” ? Laboratory and Field experiments
Week 9: Grant proposal writing
Week 10: Ethical and legal issues in Scientific Communications
Week 11: Citing references in scientific reports and captions for figures/tables
Week 12: Presenting research findings in scientific reports
Week 13: Presenting research findings in oral/poster sessions
Week 14: “Gender neutral” expressions in English reports
Week 15: Presentation and submission of final reports
Prerequisites
This course carries 1 credit. In addition to 30 hours that students spend in the class, they will be required to prepare for and review the classes using the reference materials, spending the standard amount of time as specified by the University for each class. Students must attend at least 2/3 of a course in order to receive credit for that course. Coming to class late or leaving earlier on two occasions will be counted as one time of absence.

Assessment/Grading
Assessment of students will made on the following basis.
Evaluation of Assignments (80%):
Ability to express opinions clearly, completion of assignments and a final presentation at the end of the course.

Class attendance and group discussion
