概要 |
The purpose of this course is to prepare students to effectively communicate with other researchers and scientists in English. Students will also focus on learning basic strategies for debating and participating in lively academic discussions. In addition to oral communication activities, students will also be engaged in tasks aimed at improving their English writing skills. |

In order to pass this course, students should have: 1. Attended regularly and participated actively in class activities. 2. Acquired knowledge of communication strategies covered in the course. 3. Demonstrated ability in joining and leading group discussions. 4. Successfully completed all written assignments. |

1. Course objectives and introduction 2. Expressing opinions / agreeing and disagreeing / discussion expressions / types of opinion: survey 3. Giving reasons / comparing and contrasting / brainstorming reasons / mini-debates 1 4. Brainstorming reasons / mini-debates 2 5. Supporting opinions / types of support / giving supports / building a case study 6. Building a case study / avoiding plagiarism / paraphrasing and summarizing / Case Study Task 7. Paraphrasing and summarizing / citing sources / making a reference list / Case Study writing 8. Leading an academic discussion: Task 1 assignment / forming questions / direct vs indirect questions / inquiring about laboratory research / Case Study writing 9. Case Study presentations/discussion and submission 10. Leading an academic discussion: Task 1 / writing skills (conjunctions and linking words) 11. Final Assignment: Business Plan / following an outline / discussing new trends in biotechnology 12. Leading an academic discussion: Task 2 / writing skills (article usage) 13. Business Plan: instructor feedback / writing skills (verb-tense consistency; flow) 14. Leading an academic discussion: Task 3 / Business Plan: final writing and peer-editing 15.
