概要

この講義では、大学院生の皆さんに科学コミュニケーションに必要な英語を使う、多くの機会を設けます。各自の研究に関する英文レポート作成や、英語で研究者、科学者とのより円滑で効率的なコミュニケーションを可能にすることを目的とします。また、私たちに必要不可欠であるエネルギー、食糧、繊維などの資源における持続的利用法をディスカッションします。

到達基準

この講義では、以下の項目の達成を目標とする。 (1) 研究内容を英語で口頭発表する。 (2) セミナー、ワークショップ、討論会、で英語で自分の意見やコメントなどを発言する。 (3) 研究に基づき英語で論文を書き、他の研究者との円滑な交流をする。 (4) 英語で研究提案を書く。

授業内容

以下のとおり講義を予定する。 Topics Week 1: Orientation: Explanation of the course content and grading criteria. Week 2: Communicating in multi-cultural/racial societies. Week 3: Scientific journals and writing styles. Week 4: Choosing attractive research titles. Week 5: A brief explanation of the main components of a scientific report (Abstract, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results and Discussion, Conclusions, References, Acknowledgement). Week 6: Connectors mostly used by native English writers in scientific reports. Week 7: Identifying and correcting errors in scientific reports. Week 8: Writing reports based on “model experiments” ? Questionnaire-based surveys, Laboratory and Field experiments. Week 9: Writing Research proposals. Week 10: Ethical and legal issues in Scientific Communications. Week 11: Citing references in scientific reports and captions for figures and tables. Week 12: Presenting data and statistical results in scientific reports. Week 13: Sexist expressions in English reports. Week 14: Commonly used expressions in oral/poster presentations. Week 15: Presentation and submission of final reports.
