概要 |
This course aims to develop students' oral and written communication ability in technical and academic English. Special emphasis is placed on acquiring the skills needed to prepare and deliver effective oral presentations in English. Students will have the opportunity to discuss and present topics related to their field of studies and laboratory activities. |

In this course, students are expected to: 1. Demonstrate the ability to explain technical concepts and laboratory research activities in English; 2. Understand and follow the basic structure of an oral presentation; 3. Successfully prepare and deliver assigned oral presentations on topics related to their field of study; 4. Actively participate in class activities and discussions using English to the best of their ability. |
授業内容 |
1. Course objectives and orientation 2. Introducing others; Posture, eye contact, and gestures; Presentation task 1 guidelines: Describing an object 3. Presentation structure: The introduction, body with transitions, and conclusion 4. Making effective slides; Explaining slides; Citing sources and making a reference list 5. Presentation peer-editing and practice; Voice inflection; The “Read-Connect-Speak” technique 6. Student presentations 1: Describing an object 7. Student Presentations 1: Describing an object; Presentation task 2 guidelines: Explaining a process or procedure 8. Providing background information; Linking words and time connectors; Tense; Active vs passive voice 9. Checking for audience understanding; Presentation peer-editing and practice 10. Student presentations 2: Explaining a process or procedure 11. Student presentations 2: Explaining a process or procedure; Presentation Task 3 guidelines: Persuasive presentation or IMRAD presentation 12. The Introduction, Methods and Materials, Results, and Discussion (IMRAD) format; Comparing and contrasting; Planning and making effective slides 2 13. Presentation peer-editing and practice; Student and instructor feedback on slides 14. Final student presentations 15. Final student presentations Note: Syllabus may change according to class needs. |
履修条件・関連項目 |
This elective course carries 2 credits. In addition to the 30 hours that students spend in the class, they are recommended to prepare for, and review, the classes using the course handouts, spending the standard amount of time as specified by the University for each class. Students must attend at least 2/3 of a course in order to receive credit for that course. If students do not fully attend the class for two times, it will be counted as one time of absence. |

Students are required to prepare an A-4 size file folder to keep handouts in order. Plagiarism in any form is strictly unacceptable. Plagiarized assignments will receive a grade of “D”, and second offences may result in course failure. |
