概要

The purpose of this course is to provide students with an introduction to various studies of society, culture, and communication. First, students will learn key concepts, theories, and research methods in the field of anthropology. Next, they will learn a variety of topics in the field of sociolinguistics. Finally, they will learn how different media shape the way people communicate through various findings in the field of socio-informatics studies.

Students should be able to do the following: 1. To understand the integrative view across socio-cultural science and natural science. 2. To be familiar with the concept of cultural relativism and the problems of ethnocentrism. 3. To understand the ethnographic research methodology on culture, language, and nature. 4. To think critically about a variety of topics in the field of sociolinguistics. 5. To critically read academic articles in the field of sociolinguistics. 6. To understand differences between human communication and machine communication. 7. To understand historical transformations of social structures and how different media affected them. 8. To understand how information works in current society.

履修条件・関連項目

This course is elective. Students should make adequate preparations before each class spending the standard amount of time as specified by the university to achieve the credit as well as 30 hours of class attendance.

成績評価の方法

Class Participation (20%) Assignments and Exams (80%) Students’ performances are evaluated through short quizzes, class assignments, and exams on anthropology, sociolinguistics, and socio-informatics.
