概要 |
This course aims to develop students' oral and written communication ability in technical and scientific English. Special emphasis will be placed on acquiring the skills needed to prepare and deliver effective scientific presentations in English. By the end of this course, students should be able to: 1. Demonstrate the ability to explain technical/scientific concepts and laboratory research activities in English. 2. Understand and follow the standard structure of an oral presentation. 3. Successfully prepare and deliver assigned oral presentations on topics related to their field of study. 4. Actively participate in scientific discussions. |
授業内容 |
1. Course objectives and introductions; Laboratory research projects discussion 2. Preparing to lead an academic discussion; Writing an article summary; Useful discussion expressions 3. Leading an academic discussion 1; Presentation assignment guidelines: Problem-Solution presentation 4. Problem-Solution presentation structure: situation, problem, solution/response, and evaluation sections; Presentation structure, signpost expressions, and script writing guidelines 5. Signaling problems and solutions; Listing strategies; Providing evidence; Critiquing a solution; Avoiding plagiarism: summarizing, paraphrasing, citing sources, and making a reference list 6. Making effective slides; Script writing feedback 7. Slide sharing and peer feedback; Presentation delivery practice: eye contact (The “Read-Connect-Speak” technique); Speaking from notes; Using effective gestures 8. Problem-Solution presentations 9. Problem-Solution presentations 10. Leading an academic discussion 2; Discussing new trends in engineering and computer science 11. Final assignment guidelines and outline: Business Plan 12. 履修条件・関連項目 |
This elective course carries 2 credits. In addition to the 30 hours that students spend in the class, they are recommended to prepare for, and review, the classes using the course material provided, spending the standard amount of time as specified by the University for each class. Students must attend at least 2/3 of a course in order to receive credit for that course. If students do not fully attend the class for two times, it will be counted as one time of absence. |
