概要 |
This course aims to develop students' oral and written communication ability in technical and scientific English. Special emphasis is placed on acquiring the skills needed to prepare and deliver effective scientific presentations in English. Students will also have the opportunity to lead discussions on topics related to their field of studies and laboratory activities. By the end of this course, students should be able to: 1. Demonstrate the ability to explain technical/scientific concepts and laboratory research activities in English. 2. Understand and follow the standard structure of an oral presentation. 3. Successfully prepare and deliver assigned oral presentations on topics related to their field of study. 4. Actively participate in group discussions on topics related to science and technology. |
授業内容 |
Week 1: Course objectives and introductions Week 2: Presentation 1 guidelines: Describing an Object; Presentation structure: introduction, body with transitions, and conclusion; Signpost expressions; Script writing guidelines; Brainstorming topics Week 3: Organizational strategies and language for describing objects; Avoiding plagiarism: summarizing, paraphrasing, citing sources, and making a reference list Week 4: Making effective slides; Explaining visuals Week 5: Slide peer-editing; Eye contact: the “Read-Connect-Speak” technique; Using gestures; Delivery practice Week 6: Oral presentations: Describing an Object Week 7: Oral presentations: Describing an Object; Preparing to lead an academic discussion; Writing an article summary; Useful discussion expressions Week 8: Leading an academic discussion 1 Week 9: Presentation 2 guidelines: Explaining a process or procedure; Brainstorming topics Week 10: Providing background information; Using time connectors and sequence words Week 11: Tense and voice (active vs passive voice) in scientific discourse Week 12: Leading an academic discussion 2 Week 13: Slide peer-editing; Delivery practice; Strategies for handling Q&A Week 14: Final Presentations: Explaining a process or procedure Week 15: Final Presentations: Explaining a process or procedure Note: Syllabus may change according to class needs. |
履修条件・関連項目 |
This elective course carries 2 credits. In addition to the 30 hours that students spend in the class, they are recommended to prepare for, and review, the classes using the course material, spending the standard amount of time as specified by the University for each class. Students must attend at least 2/3 of a course in order to receive credit for that course. If students do not fully attend the class for two times, it will be counted as one time of absence. |
